Can you make the Bad Times trend from one selfie?

Yes. One clear selfie is enough. Your face, hair and top come from the photo; anything the selfie doesn't show, like your trousers, is filled in to match. If you want your own full outfit in it, use a waist-up or full-length photo.

What a selfie gives you

The argument shows you from the head to the knees for the first ten seconds, then your face fills the screen at the lens. We tested a shoulder-up café selfie: the full-body frame kept his face, hair and sweater and filled in dark trousers, and the close-up at the lens looked like him.

So a selfie works best when:

  • your face is sharp and facing the camera, because it ends up filling the screen;
  • the light is even, with no sunglasses or heavy beauty filter;
  • you're the only person in it.

When a waist-up photo is better

If the outfit matters, say a costume, a uniform or your favourite jacket, use a photo that shows it. What isn't in the photo is made up to fit, so it won't be your actual jeans or shoes. More tips in which photo to use.

Check before you pay

The first thing you get is a free picture of you right at the lens, made from your selfie. If it doesn't look like you, change the photo before filming the preview. If it does, the free 4-second preview shows you standing in the kitchen.

Selfies: questions

Do I need a full-body photo?

No. A clear selfie works; the rest of your body is filled in. Use a full-body or waist-up photo if you want your own outfit.

Can I use more than one photo?

No. The video takes one photo of one person. Pick the sharpest one where you face the camera.
